From time to time, exceptional individuals appear among the general public. Individuals who are distinguished by above-average qualities, allowing them to achieve great things, unavailable to the rest. Just such a person turned out to be “Inky” – an octopus, which valued life in the wild extremely highly.

Both the Great Houdini and David Copperfield would surely have been proud, knowing what the octopus had done, to want to leave the National Aquarium in New Zealand to taste once again the freedom offered by the boundlessness of the ocean.

“Inky” – a male of the species pinnoctopus cordiformis, one day noticed that the lid to his tank was ajar. The cephalopod did not hesitate for a moment and decided to take advantage of the gift from fate and the onlookers of the aquarium staff.

As befits a true story of a prison escape, it all took place at night. The building was empty, so the animal had a few hours before someone noticed its disappearance and sounded the alarm. The clever “Inky” climbed out through the ajar lid of the tank and slipped down its wall, then travelled a few metres to the sewer opening. From there he made his way out to his longed-for freedom through a drainage pipe that flows directly into the waters of Hawke’s Bay.

[blockquote style=”1″]”Octopuses are very intelligent creatures and true artists when it comes to escapes. However, what Inky did to get out into the wild is simply amazing. I don’t think he was unhappy or lonely with us, but his curiosity about the world and personality as an explorer took over,” said Rob Yarrell, aquarium manager [/blockquote].

The aquarium staff were surprised, but not amazed. “Inky” became known as a very curious and intelligent octopus. He was extremely friendly and inquisitive, which made him extremely popular and he became one of the favourites of the staff and guests. Staff who came into contact with him say quite simply that “Inky” stood out from the rest because he had personality.

“Inky” ended up in the aquarium brought by a fisherman. At present, the employees say they are not looking for a replacement, as it is impossible to replace such a person. Besides, they still hope that one day “Inky” will come back to them.
