Huge coral fading in the Philippines

Disturbing news is coming from the Philippines. Coral reef enthusiasts and marine conservationists have raised the alarm over a major coral fade in the coastal waters of Batangas province and the country’s west coast.

Philippine Coral Bleaching Watch, an online news platform reported that more reports of coral fading in parts of the waters off Batangas, northern Palawan, Mindoro and Negros Occidental and Panay Island are coming in all the time.

In Calatagan, massive coral die-offs are being observed along the entire 72km coastline of the Calatagan Peninsula from Barangay Gulod to Barangay Tanagan.

“While we are busy fighting the pandemic on land, we have an equally big problem underwater,” said Jessie delos Reyes, a Bantay Dagat local and team leader of the NGO Reef Check Philippines.

According to media reports, corals are in a much worse state than they were back in May. Marine ecologists have long blamed global warming for this phenomenon.
