Ghost Shark – unusual deep sea dweller filmed for the first time

Today we have a completely unique video for you. The video shows a creature known as the troll hydrolagus, which belongs to the cartilaginous fish of the chimera family. Unusual, mysterious and still unknown. This animal inhabits the oceanic depths and is a mystery that has fascinated researchers for years.

The most common term for the troll hydrolagus, as used in the title, is “Ghost Shark”. (Until recently , human contact with these unusual inhabitants of the ocean depths was limited to finding dead individuals. However, the situation changed in 2009, when researchers from Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, recorded a live individual!

Although the incident took place over 6 years ago, the footage of the ghost shark has only now been made public. Above, we have the first documented case of a live encounter with this unusual species.

The video was taken by ROV while exploring the depths of the Pacific Ocean, in the area between California and Hawaii. Of course, the encounter with this mysterious creature is a complete coincidence and one could even say a true miracle. The film was recorded at a depth of over 2000 metres and this is the first time a representative of this species has been encountered in the northern hemisphere.

Thetroll hydrolagus is a real enigma. Studying dead specimens, scientists have found that it has a retractable sex organ placed… on its head. It is also known that representatives of this species roamed the ocean waters long before the appearance of dinosaurs. Despite this, our knowledge of these creatures is still rudimentary.
