A very unusual incident took place today in the waters of the Bay of Gdańsk. In the early hours of the morning, a whale was freed from a fishing net. It is believed to be the same animal that has been circling in the nearby waters for several weeks.

The whole action of freeing the giant creature was carried out at 5.00 a.m. by Border Guard officers, supported by specialists from the Marine Station of the University of Gdansk.

The animal was first spotted off the coast of Gdynia a fortnight ago by the crew of the rocket frigate ORP Kościuszko. Last Saturday, in turn, a whale measuring about 10 metres was spotted by sailors from the sailing ship “Generał Zaruski”. During several passes near the animal, they took several photos of the creature, which emerged from the water several times.

“After a preliminary analysis of the photographic material, many features indicate that we are probably dealing with a humpback whale, otherwise known as a longfinned wh ale,” Iwona Pawliczka from the Marine Station of the University of Gdansk in Hel told Radio Gdansk.

The appearance of a humpback whale in our waters is a real rarity and a situation that has so far been extremely rare. This is mainly due to the fact that there is no suitable food for them here, which often results in a tragic end to such visits. As specialists explain, this whale may feed on small fish such as sprats or herrings and eventually find its way back, which leads through Danish straits to the Atlantic.
