A full version of the documentary Dave Not Coming Back, which takes a look at the story of David Shaw, has appeared on YouTube.
The documentary tells the story of Australian technical diver David Shaw, who died on January 8, 2005 in the flooded South African cave Boesmansgat.
Without a doubt, this is a story that technical diving enthusiasts are well aware of. On October 28, 2004, after only five years of training, Dave descended on closed circuit to the bottom of the legendary Boesmansgat cave. At the time it was considered the deepest in the world, and Dave Shaw broke four world records on that occasion.
While diving to a depth of 260 meters, Dave came across the corpse of another diver. This was 20-year-old Deon Dreyer, who died during the dive on December 17, 1994.
We knew that the corpses of another diver were located there. However, we did not expect to come across them. We were both well aware that we would return there and bring the body to the surface – Don Shirley.
After the dive was over, Dave and Don made a phone call to Deon Dreyer‘s family. From that point on, the incidents were already moving at lightning speed. The two men organized a team of 8 divers to secure the dive, as well as a filmmaker. His goal was to gather footage documenting the extremely challenging and difficult operation to retrieve the body from the bottom of the cave.
Unfortunately. No one could have expected to see Dave alive again after the plunge….
Dave Not Coming Back is a story of loss and grief in which ego and altruism, hubris and self-control, risk-taking and spirituality go hand in hand. A chain of paradoxical choices that lead to a long-predicted tragedy, but which could not have been prevented.
David Shaw ‘s story has already appeared in the book “Darkness” and in a documentary film “Immersed in Boesmansgat”. from 2015, which presents never-published footage from South African television. Both items have been published and are available on the Polish market.
