Certainly, most divers have never had the opportunity to dive witha full-face mask. Therefore, in the case of this piece of equipment, they are forced to rely on theory and their own imagination. All the more reason to confront them with reality, because despite its futuristic appearance, the Ocean Reef mask is as real as it gets.
Comfort in diving is extremely important. From thermal performance to breathability and visibility. These three elements are absolutely key and Ocean Reef mask has an effect on each of them. Firstly, our face is not in contact with water, so we are warmer. Secondly, an integrated automatic breathing machine feeds air into the mask and we can breathe both through our nose and mouth. And thirdly, the large visor provides a wide field of visionThe kind of experience that no diving mask can offer.
Before we move on to what’s inside, let’s stay for a moment with the design, because it is truly amazing. You can see that the people responsible for the design put in a lot of work and did their job well.
At a time when design in every industry seems extremely bland, the Americans have given a real show. By creating the Neptune III, they have shown that diving equipment can combine great build quality and performance with great looks. Let’s be honest, if someone showed you this mask and told you it was a gadget from the new Star Wars, you would believe it without much trouble.
Enough about the appearance, however, because it does not determine whether the Ocean Reef mask is worth attention (although it certainly attracts it). Certainly, the undoubted advantage of diving in a full-face mask is the ability to breathe freely through the nose. Not having to hold a piece of silicone in your mouth is also a big plus.
The thermal comfort mentioned above is also much better than with a normal mask. The whole face together with temples is shielded from water. What is important, we will not experience evaporation, which for some is quite a serious problem. As a result, our large field of vision The only limitation is the clarity of the water in which we dive. People with impaired vision can easily put on goggles under the mask and go underwater. No lenses, corrective lenses or other partial solutions.
What is very important is Ocean Reef mask does not leak. All because of the positive pressure inside it. Even if the mask unseals from our skin, the air will not allow water to get inside.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that the mask is only one part of the whole system. The entire system can be expanded with communication on different levels, e.g. diver-to-diver or diver-to-surface. We do this in a very simple way, by adding individual elements to the mask.
You can read more about the Ocean Reef mask and impressions from the dives we made in different environments in the next issue of DIVERS24 magazine.
