36-year-old Egyptian Walaa Hafez last Saturday became the new Guinness World Record holder for the longest dive in the sea. The dive was conducted at a depth of about 10m in the Red Sea, specifically in Hurghada, and lasted 51h and 20min. During the dive the temperature oscillated around 22ºC.
Although the record attempt took place quite shallow, according to the organisers, a dive exceeding the 55h time would require an extensive and complicated decompression plan. To avoid hypothermia and hypothermia, the record holder used a dry suit and an electric heating system.
Another important point was a well-balanced and prepared diet, consisting of liquid food and drinks to maintain adequate energy levels and blood chemistry stability.
With his feat, Walaa Hafez broke the previous record held by American Allen Sherrod, who remained underwater for 51h 4min in 2014.
Walaa has become yet another Guinness World Record holder from Egypt, and with his feat he has decided to promote tourism in his country and the protection of the underwater world from increasing degradation.
This Thursday, Ahmed Gabr will take part in another Guinness World Record attempt when he dives underwater with 400 other divers.
