It all happened in Marina di Camerota, in the south of Naples. It was there that divers were conducting an exploration of the “Bloody Grotto”. According to the police report, everyone was prepared for such a dive and the guide was experienced in his craft. Unfortunately, all this did not save from an accident.

The cave, with its red walls (hence the name), is located at a depth of 14m. While exploring the cave, the divers chose the wrong tunnel and found themselves in a dead end instead of the exit. It was then that the less experienced divers began to panic and stress. As a result of their nervous actions, clouds of sludge rose from the bottom of the cave, and visibility momentarily dropped to zero.

“When I saw the nervous movements of the guide, I knew it was wrong. At some point I managed to find a way out. I immediately pulled as many people as I could and we moved towards the light. Once at the surface, I realised that four of us were still missing”. – Marco Sebastiani, one of the divers, reported.

Rescue services extracted the divers’ bodies from the spot Sebastiani had pointed out to them. The cramped room with a sandy bottom proved deadly for the inexperienced group. According to local divers, these types of caves are very treacherous as visibility is easily blurred to 0.
