Researchers at Texas State University in Austin have found a wreck dating back to the 17th century. According to some speculation, it may be the remains of Captain Henry Morgan’s ship – a famous pirate. The find was made at the mouth of the Chargres River in Panama.

A research team, led by Fritz Hanselmann, has discovered and documented what appears to be a lost vessel from Captain Morgan’s fleet.

“Sir Henry Morgan was a caper. There is a very thin line between that term and the term pirate, and the view of the whole issue depends on your point of view. This was especially the case in the 17th century, when the British Empire did not have a fleet to patrol the western territories ,” Hyanselmann said

Before Captain Morgan, was able to invade Panama, five of his ships, including the flagship had run aground near Lajas Reef. It was to this place that Fritz Hyanselmann led his research team. Subsequent exploration, however, required considerable financial resources. The solution to the problem came from a rather unexpected direction, as the researchers were supported by a rum producer… Captain Morgan.

The funds obtained in this way were used for magnetometer testing. This consists, more or less, in searching for metal by examining deviations in the earth’s magnetic field.

“With this survey, we can detect things as small as bullets, or as big as guns or anchors,” – explained Bert Ho, research leader.

Using this method, the team located the wooden hull of the ship. Closed boxes and cargo crates were also found, all covered in coral. Is this part of the legendary treasure, the famous Captain Morgan? We will find out soon enough.
