The diving community received the news about the plans to build Deepspot with disbelief, but also with great enthusiasm. The pool, as it was presented, not only looked insane, but was also supposed to be as deep as 45 metres, making it the deepest facility of its kind in the world! At least for a while… In the distance there was the spectre of Blue Abyss – a huge investment located in Great Britain, the deepest point of which was to reach the depth of 50 metres.
The two facilities differ in almost everything, and are united by the fact that they will be magnificent pools to be used by divers and freedivers. Deepspot seems to be oriented mainly towards sport and recreation, while Blue Abyss is an investment oriented towards testing advanced equipment for underwater work, training specialised personnel and as a testing ground for the European Space Agency – ESA. It is with this last aspect in mind that the facility will be equipped with its own hyperbaric chamber and a weightlessness simulator. The difference is therefore visible to the naked eye, as here sport diving is only to be a certain addition.

From the very first moments there was a struggle against time. The question was asked over and over again: will the Polish facility be finished on time, so that, at least for a few months, it can become the deepest diving pool in the world, taking the title away from Y-40 in Italy (42m deep)? Some people were keeping their fingers crossed that the work would be completed on time, while others were sceptical from the start. Unfortunately, the latter were right. However, this does not change anything.
Although the completion of Deepspot has been postponed until the end of the first quarter of 2020 due to minor delays, achieving the title of this deepest seems to be in no danger. Blue Abyss will probably be built and retain the title of record holder for a long time, the question is however – when will it happen? At the beginning of 2019, the facility changed its original location and the completion date was moved to spring 2021. Is this a realistic date? It’s not for me to judge, but it seems that everything is still at a stage where there are no tangible results and until construction starts, Blue Abyss only exists in theory.
So we are calmly waiting for the Deepspot pool to be finalised and for the grand opening. There are delays here and probably there will be more, but this does not change the fact that the facility is moving step by step towards opening and next year it will be the pride and joy of the Polish diving community.
