Dancing with sharks – film

None of our readers need to be made aware of the plight of the world’s largest predators. Global trade in shark fins and the lack of proper legislation is causing the shark population to be exterminated before our very eyes. The heroine of today’s article, Hannah Fraser, decided to draw attention to the problem and express her opposition to such practices in a rather unusual way.

The Australian is one of the most popular underwater models and a declared defender of the underwater world. In protest against the brutal fishing of sharks near beaches, recently introduced by the authorities of her country (Western Australian shark cull), she decided to jump without any protection (as well as without any diving equipment), among a swarming herd of tiger sharks, up to 5m in size!

In this original form of protest, she was supported by well-known filmmaker and prestigious Emmy award winner Shawn Heinrichs and leading specialist in interaction with large predators Jim Abernethy. Joining forces, this unusual trio decided to carry out a mission that had never been attempted before.

The helpless model, covered all over her body with a special pattern (bodypainting) and wearing only a thin costume, tried to present sharks in a positive light, showing their delicate and peaceful side.

Creating this image in such conditions required great skill and experience in addition to courage and belief in the rightness of one’s cause. There was no room for mistakes, as any of them could have ended in serious injury or even death.

Fortunately, none of the creators’ serious concerns came to fruition in the course of production. Instead, the filmmakers have succeeded in creating a unique work that is sure to reverberate around the world and draw attention to a problem whose consequences may soon be irreversible.
