On 5 December, in the waters of the Gulf of Gdansk, divers from the Maritime Regional Unit of the Border Guard attempted to identify the wreck found by employees of the Maritime Office in Gdynia. After a preliminary identification, it was established that it is most likely the vessel “Skalar”, which sank during a regatta in 1993.

The dive, near Orłowo beach, was carried out from the board of Border Guard patrol vessel SG-111. The wreck resting at the depth of several meters, is 7m long. It is covered with sand, shells and other sediments characteristic for the Baltic Sea, which makes it impossible to read its name.

“Skalar” sank during an all-night regatta that lasted from 6 p.m. At around 6.40 p.m. the weather conditions deteriorated significantly and during a gale, the yacht overturned and the crew fell into the water. After firing red flares, they received assistance and were pulled from the water. Force majeure was considered to be the cause of the sinking, and proceedings at the Maritime Chamber were discontinued.

The vessel, due to its small size and the lack of an exact sinking position, could not be found and recovered for a long time.
