The tunicates are marine animals with an uncomplicated structure. They belong to the group of string fish. They are characterised by an organic protective layer called a tunic.

These simple organisms, which do not exceed 1cm in size, can form colonies reaching up to 4m! Most species of tunicates inhabit warm, shallow waters, but they are also found in deep and cold waters, e.g. in the western part of the Baltic Sea.
