Many of our readers grew up watching films made by Jaques Cousteau. Often called the father of modern diving, he inspired countless people to explore the deep. So these people will be pleased to know that we will be seeing a lot of restored footage in a new National Geographic documentary.

Becoming Cousteau is not only an opportunity to relive those wonderful moments, but also to instil a love of the underwater world and the exploration bug in future generations. The restored materials, although many years old, have a unique atmosphere and still make a great impression today.

To go deeper and stay there longer, I became an inventor out of necessity – says Cousteau in the archive recording.

The new National Geographic documentary is 133 minutes long. Oscar nominated and Emmy award winning director Liz Garbus is responsible for directing. On the production side, Oscar winner Evan Hayes did his best. As we can read in the first reviews of Becoming Cousteau, the New York Times described the film as fascinating.

Undoubtedly, among Cousteau ‘s many achievements, we should mention the co-development and introduction into use of the Aqua-Lung breathing apparatus, the famous documentary film “The Silent World” (The Silent World, 1956) or the underwater research conducted from aboard the iconic ship Calypso. Since it is impossible to mention them all, this should be all the more an incentive to see Becoming Cousteau.

Adventurerfilmmaker, inventor, writer and conservationist. For decades Cousteau and his team were discovering and showing the world the secrets of the ocean depths. The Frenchman laid the foundation for modern diving and exploration of the seas and oceans. Today, from the perspective of a cinema armchair, we can take another look at how it all began.

Julia
My love for scuba diving started as a 12-year-old in the Canary Islands, at which time I took my first Open Water Diver course. This love for the blue turned into a huge passion that accompanies me to this day. Although blue is hard to come by in the Baltic, no conditions are terrible for me. In this sport, I find peace, patience, courage, focus, and balance. I have recently started to engage in underwater modeling and I am fulfilled with this.
