The prosecutor’s office and experts have revealed some information to the media about a diving accident which took place in the waters of Lake Dymno on Wednesday, 29 December. The incident resulted in the death of a 35-year-old man, which we reported in our pages. A few days after the tragedy, the first details of its circumstances are emerging.

The information that emerged a few hours after the accident seems to have been confirmed. It is about buying equipment and deciding to dive at your own risk, without having the necessary training and the required authorisation to do so.

The forensic expert concluded that the cause of death of 35-year-old Tateusz C. was drowning. However, he was unable to reconstruct the detailed course of events and the mechanism that led to death.

“In the course of the investigation we established that the man had bought the equipment himself and decided to dive at his own risk. He wanted to dive with his two friends, whom he even instructed on how to dive. We have also established that the man in all probability did not have a diving licence.” – said Michał Krzemianowski, district prosecutor in Miastko

According to the prosecutor, the male victim of the accident had planned to dive with two of his friends, whom he had instructed on how to dive and behave underwater. As luck would have it, the two companions had to deliberate due to the low temperature. It is therefore safe to assume that it was this detail – the low temperature – that saved their lives.

Every trained and certified diver knows how beautiful the underwater world is, worth exploring and discovering. At the same time, everyone who has completed a diving course also realises how dangerous it is to go underwater without having the right skills, training and efficient, streamlined equipment. Without this knowledge and training, we are at the mercy of chance, and then the most mundane detail can turn out to be deadly.
