So that everyone can enjoy the view of the beautiful reefs, the Australian authorities intend to create a reserve that would cover an area larger than France and the UK combined.

The reserve was to encompass the north-east coast, stretching across the Great Barrier Reef to Papua New Guinea in the north and the Solomon Islands in the east. The chosen area is home to many unique and often endangered species. These include, for example, large fish such as tuna and sharks.

” Only here, can you find such a diverse coral reef, sandy beautiful bottom and deep underwater canyons,” said Tony Burke, Minister for the Environment.

As a result of these plans, new catch limits will be introduced and oil and gas exploitation will be completely banned.

Representatives of environmental organisations, believe it is a good move on the part of the government, but according to them, the protection of the waters should be stronger, especially in sensitive and endangered places, so as to be able to provide long-term and stable protection.The proposal is now subject to a three-month government debate.
