Polish diver Artur Kozłowski’s exploration of one of the Irish caves in County Gallway ended dramatically. Winner of the Colossus Award for 2010, he plunged into the waters of the Pollonora cave, with a supply of gases for 6 hours of diving, but unfortunately did not leave the system of corridors.

Arthur’s body was located 800m into the cave, at a depth of 52m. The news of the Polish diver’s death spread around the world when it was reported on RTE Irish TV. So far, the cause of Arthur’s death has not been established.

It’s hard to believe, but he started his diving adventure in 2006, making a dozen or so dives in the warm waters of the Gulf of Osman. That was enough. In 2007, he began his education as a cave diver under the guidance of Welsh instructor Marytna Farr.

A year later, while exploring Pollatoomary cave, he set a British record for the deepest cave dive – 103m. From then on he dedicated himself to exploring Irish caves. Continuing to develop as a diver, in 2009, he began using a rebreather.

Arthur has persistently penetrated the flooded caves of Ireland, searching for a connection between the Polltoophill corridor systems in Castletown and Polldeelin in Kiltartan, County Gallway. In 2010, his work was crowned with success. Over a hundred hours spent underwater and kilometres of explored underwater corridors led him to achieve his goal. As he used to say about himself, “The idea is that I go where others turn back”. This approach, his persistence in pursuing his goal and his desire to constantly evolve, allowed him to achieve so much, in a relatively short time. Unfortunately, the taste for success and the desire to explore the unknown always brings with it great risks.

Arthur left, doing what he loved and following his restless spirit, which pushed him towards what was undiscovered and needed to be known. He pursued his dreams and passions to the very end.

Rest in peace.
