In recent weeks, the system of artificial reefs located off the coast of New York has been expanded once again. The whole operation is part of a broader plan to create more diverse underwater ecosystems by creating more sanctuaries and habitats for marine flora and fauna.

Behind it all is the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, which is responsible for creating a system that currently consists of twelve artificial reefs. The latest expansion completed as part of this huge project took place at Hempstead Reef, located off the coast of Long Island.

Tugboat to be sunk as next element in New York’s artificial reef system

It was here that sixteen railcars donated for the purpose by Wells Fargo Rail Corporation, a steel turbine provided by NYPA / Canal Corporation and a 70-foot tug were placed on the bottom after being cleaned and prepared for sinking.

At this point it is worth reminding that not so long ago the east coast of the USA, as part of the expansion of the artificial reef system, was also enriched by wreck of the freighter which used to belong to the US Navyand information about this fact and a film illustrating its sinking was published in August.

The next expansion of New York State’s artificial reef program is a testament to our unwavering commitment to protecting and restoring the environment and vulnerable underwater ecosystems, said New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo

Governor Cuomo also assured that this is not the end! During his speech and presentation of the results of the latest activities, the politician announced a plan to double the existing area of artificial reef within New York State and announced the planned expansion of seven of the twelve existing reefs and the creation of four new ones by the end of 2022.
