A stunning discovery has been made in the Mediterranean waters off the coast of Turkey, near Marmaris. Local fishermen have fished out an ancient bronze statue of a woman from the seabed.

Every diver knows that there are still countless treasures lying on the seabed. This is true at every latitude, but the Mediterranean is very special. It is in this region that ancient discoveries occur with a frequency not seen anywhere else.

Nevertheless, the surprise of the fishermen who pulled out their nets after a night’s fishing was immense. The large weight heralded a successful catch, but no one could have expected the beautiful bronze statue.
The bewildered and slightly shocked Turkish fishermen reported their find to the coastguard, which secured the find.

When the boat with the unusual catch reached the harbour, uniformed services and representatives of the Marmaris Maritime Museum were already waiting on shore. One can only imagine their delight when they saw with their own eyes the statue of an unidentified woman measuring about 2 metres and weighing 300 kg.

Ancient Mediterranean statue Turkey There is currently no information on the find given by experts or museum staff. It has only been announced that an official statement regarding the statue will be made once the find has been examined by specialists.

It is not difficult to imagine the further course of events. Probably Turkish archaeologists will at least make a cursory search of the area at the position indicated by the fishermen. After all, it would be unusual for this statue to lie on the bottom all alone …
