On 27 April, a video of an unspecified ‘something’ appeared on the internet. There was a heated discussion in the net about what this creature, which appears on the video, could be. Today it is already known that it is deepstaria enigmatica.

The footage is most likely from an ROV inspecting an underwater device 1.5km underwater. The footage shows this amazing creature up close and from several perspectives. In individual shots, we can even see the jellyfish’s internal organs.

The species in question has been known to humanity since 1967. From information gathered, it is known to inhabit Arctic and Antarctic waters at depths of 800-2000m. Deepstaria enigmatica owes its name to the ROV Deep Star, which was the first to document its existence. What distinguishes deepstaria from other jellyfish is that it has no tentacles. Its size reaches about 60cm.
