An artificial reef has been created in Lebanon from sunken tanks

With the end of July, Lebanon has added another tourist attraction for divers. Tanks and other military vehicles were sunk in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, 3 km off the coast of the city of Sidon. In the near future, the installation is expected to attract not only many tourists, but also representatives of the local flora and fauna, giving a strong impetus to the flourishing of the local ecosystem.

A giant crane placed 10 old tanks and military vehicles on the seabed, which, less than two weeks after being sunk, have already become the main subject of photos from dives conducted in Lebanon. Once again it was confirmed how eager the diving community is to visit similar attractions.

And it doesn’t end there! Each sunken machine is full of nooks and crannies, where representatives of the underwater world make their hiding places. So we can be sure that during the dive, in addition to military relics, we will be able to admire many creatures inhabiting the waters of the Mediterranean.

The creation of the new artificial reef is the result of action taken by the local association Friends of the coast of Sidon. It was its members who took the unwanted old vehicles from the Lebanese army and then cleaned them of all harmful elements until they were in a condition that allowed them to settle safely on the bottom.

[blockquote style=”2″]”This will be a real paradise for divers and a place where underwater life will flourish,” said NGO representative Kamel Kozbar, who hopes the vehicles will soon be covered with representatives of the flora and fauna.”[/blockquote]

Lebanon has about 200 km of coastline, but it is degraded to a very large extent by mountains of rubbish. For the area around the town of Sidon, the situation is similar, despite the construction of a modern waste facility.

Lebanon’s newest tourist attraction has also not escaped impact from political tensions in the region. Lebanese have expressed their solidarity with the Palestinians by pointing the barrels of sunken tanks towards Israel.
