Spaniard Aleix Segura has set a new record on held breath using oxygen! The freediver stayed underwater on one breath for a record 24 minutes and 3 seconds! The whole event took place on 28 February during the 17th Mediterranean Dive Show event in Barcelona.

The competition in question is a specific type of freediving. The competitor saturates the body with pure oxygen before attempting it, which makes the results in this discipline look really impressive. Apart from this one detail, the whole procedure is identical to the classic freediving statics. Interestingly, Aleix also holds the record in this discipline with a result of over 10 minutes!

“The proposal with the possibility of trying to set a record came a good few weeks before the event in Barcelona. We started collecting the necessary information and holding consultations. As you can guess, the doctors outlined possible risks and warned of potential dangers. We went through the possible scenarios with my safety team and decided that we were ready to attack the Guinness World Record. Of course there were specially trained medical personnel on site, as well as a properly equipped ambulance.” – said the newly crowned record holder.

The previous record belonged to Stig Severinsen, a very distinctive figure from the world of free diving. Stig achieved 22 minutes in 2012 while filming a documentary for the Discovery Channel.

“I am very happy that I managed to set another Guinness World Record. I treat it not only as a personal achievement, but also for the whole staff of people, as something that will have an impact on the whole discipline. Admittedly it’s more of a show than a real discipline in the Apnea family and sport, but I hope it will be interesting and keep people entertained.” – summed up his approach to the whole fuss by Aleix Segura.
