A new Guinness record for the longest dive!

In the waters surrounding San Diego, American Cristi Quill has attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the longest open-circuit dive in seawater. Interestingly, the previous successful attempt recently took place in Egypt and was carried out by Walaa Hafez in early June 2015. So with just over a month to go, more adjustments need to be made to the Guinness Book of World Records!

The new record is 51h 25min and is better than the previous one by… just 5 min! The reason for organising the event was to raise funds for the fight against cancer. For Quill, this was important as she herself lost her mother to cancer last year. The record-breaking event took place in the La Jolla neighbourhood, which is famous for its wide range of water sports and is known in the US as an elegant Californian resort.

This Guinness record attempt is unique in many ways. Apart from the noble aim of the whole action, it is also worth noting that the holder of the world record in this competition has never been a woman!

The event was initially scheduled for 3 days, during which Cristi was to stay at a depth of 5m for the entire time. Despite the fact that she spent almost the whole time on a deck chair, having at her disposal various ways to kill time, such as Rubik’s cube, it must be noted that it was a huge effort for her body. Therefore, out of the planned 72h, she spent only 51h 25min underwater.

All funds raised at this event, will benefit the American Cancer Society.
