As announced, Australia’s diving community did not disappoint and set a new Guinness Diving Record! Last Saturday, 362 divers went underwater at the same time, who together formed the longest underwater chain. Thus, the record set in May 2017 by Italians – 308 people – was beaten by 54 “links”!

The attempt was made at Rye Pier in Mornington Peninsula County, which is part of the Melbourne metropolitan area. The divers were not deterred even by the stormy weather that had recently haunted the area and certainly did not encourage them to come. But in the face of adversity, the Aussies made their way to the dive site in a huddle and went underwater, forming a chain of more than 270 metres.

[blockquote style=”2″]”It’s a great day. After the dive we all went to the pub to celebrate and the atmosphere was just amazing! We have an amazing dive site here and we wanted to show the world how much fun you can have underwater!” – said Luke English, spokesperson for the Diving Industry of Victoria and one of the event organisers.[/blockquote]

As the organisers themselves argued from the outset, the aim was not to “crush” the previous record, although over 400 divers quickly signed up to take part in the event, but only to beat it slightly so that the competition could continue in other places around the world in the future.

Victorian Scuba divers were successful in their world record attempt on Saturday, the weather didn’t deter from what was a well run and organised event, Congratulations to all!!!

Apart from having fun, the main aim of the event was to promote the region as a unique diving attraction. As many as four British submarine wrecks lie on the seabed in the nearby waters, making Victoria’s waters a very attractive place. Additionally, as convinced by the participants, despite stormy weather on the surface, underwater conditions for diving were ideal.

So we have a situation where the Guinness World Diving Record, which is not easy to beat, has been improved as many as twice. Will the previous holders of this title decide to break it next year? Or maybe in another place in the world they will try to improve the Australian achievement? We will find out soon, but already today we are sure that the diving year 2018 promises to be extremely exciting!
