Germany is planning to sink one of its ships in the Baltic Sea! The rocket frigate FGS “Karlsruhe” was withdrawn from service a month ago. It was quickly found a new use for it, which will certainly appeal to the diving community. According to media reports, the vessel will be sunk in the Baltic already next year!

The whole project was reported by German media on 24 July. The timing of the whole operation is not yet concrete, but it has already been decided that the wreck will land on the bottom in 2018.

Instead of being sold off to razor blades, our western neighbours have decided to make use of a still-used vessel. After appropriate adaptation, it will serve for conducting research and experiments, and as a training facility.

Before sinking, measuring devices and dummies of human figures and various equipment will be installed on board the “Karlsruhe”. During a series of missile and firefights, various parameters will be tested for the safety of seafarers at sea. In the end, the ship will be fired upon with rocket-propelled and barrelled weapons, such as those that pirates might have at their disposal.

The ship served in the German fleet since 1982 and was one of eight of the type Bremen (122). The frigate measures 130.5 metres in length and 14.6 metres in breadth. Only two of the eight are still in service today, the “Augsburg” and the “Lübeck”, and she will be replaced by another frigate of the new type, the F125 “Baden-Württemberg”.
