A few words of summary after the 2nd Warsaw Underwater Archaeology Forum

Visiting the 2nd Warsaw Underwater Archaeology Forum was a very interesting experience, although in my opinion the meeting was not dedicated to divers. This may be evidenced by the subject matter and the very cross-section of its participants.

The main audience and speakers at this scientific seminar were people passionate about archaeology, including underwater archaeology, researchers, post-graduate students and specialists from many parts of the world – min. They came from Italy, Iran, Croatia, Ukraine, Norway, Germany and Australia.

Speakers presented the different stages of their research and the results of their discoveries, underwater finds, the latest research methods used by other countries and plans for upcoming expeditions. Diving was only a tool for research or a source of knowledge about new finds.

In individual conversations, they repeatedly emphasised that they learned about the findings from the divers themselves, who during their underwater expeditions came across the remains of boats, unknown vessels or coins. Often such discoveries were the beginning of further research, but this research was the subject of interest for the forum participants, not diving.

After two days of lectures and talks, I can definitely say that underwater archaeology is an interesting field of science, with amazing stories discovered from a “piece” of wood, metal or porcelain.

Or perhaps for divers who want more than just ‘watching’, this is an interesting alternative and a good postgraduate course – they start in February so it’s worth thinking about today.
