Unusual concentration of fish in Acapulco Bay

An unusual situation has occurred off the coast of Acapulco Bay (Mexico). The waters of the beaches there were overrun by huge schools of fish, including sardines, anchovies and mackerel. The phenomenon was unique in the world and has been attributed to links with the earthquakes and tsunamis that hit Japan recently.

The dense shoals, numbering thousands of fish, looked from a bird’s eye view like an oil spill after another environmental disaster involving an oil company. Fortunately, this time there was no danger to the environment.

The local fishermen, of whom there were about 30 in the area, when they saw what was happening, abandoned their boats and equipment, called their families for help and, grabbing buckets, simply scooped the fish into them straight from the water! People on the beach came up to watch with curiosity. Some took pictures, others just watched and some tried to catch a few fish. It was easy because the fish were not afraid of people at all.

Many people link this strange phenomenon to the recent cataclysmic events in Japan, but experts are reluctant to give similar opinions.

“This is the category where we would very much like to find a link between these events, but we have no evidence to support this theory. Nevertheless, tsunamis can affect and alter local currents,” – Rich Briggs of the U.S. Geological Survey said.
