The wreck of the 17th century ship Coronation available for divers!

16 April 2011. The 17th century shipwreck “Coronation” will start a new chapter in its history. On this very day, the protected and prohibited diving vessel will be reopened to the public. All those who wish to dive the wreck of the Coronation will be able to do so, after registering and completing all the formalities.

“Coronation” was a powerful ship, equipped with 90 guns and with over 600 crew members. She sank during a storm in 1691. The story of her sinking caused a great stir across the country and led to the creation of a safe harbour and breakwater at Plymouth.

The wreck was discovered at a depth of less than 18m in the late 1960s and was one of the first vessels to be protected, in 1973. It is now found in two parts, spread over 800m.

In 2010, the idea was born to give divers the opportunity to visit the wreck and to create something like an underwater exhibition. For this purpose, a special route for visitors was designed. While sailing along it, we will be able to see, apart from the wreck, the archaeologists at work.

The aim of the project is to get as many people as possible interested in archaeology and the protection and conservation of underwater monuments. Although you will not be allowed to touch anything during the dive, and you will only be allowed in a specially designated area, this is great news and another step in the development of diving tourism. The official opening will be attended by one of the discoverers of the wreck, Pete McBride.

From what can already be seen, the idea is hugely popular, with over 450 people from 55 clubs registering so far.
