Previous year was not easy at all, also for archaeologists. Possibilities of fieldwork were very limited, especially for abroad expeditions, and the conferences happened nearly only in the virtual reality.
As the previous editions of the Warsaw Seminar on Underwater Archaeology gave both the participants and organizers loads of positive effects and satisfaction, we agreed that we don’t want to be pushed into the Internet! We succeeded in moving the funds forward in time (like in case of the previous one, also this edition is sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, DNK/SN/464684/2020) and – finally – we meet in November! And you can join us live via YouTube channel of Faculty of Archaeology, University of Warsaw!
The4th Warsaw Seminar on Underwater Archaeology will take place on 18-20 November 2021. In April we closed the call for applications. And this time, even despite the pandemic, the huge interest from both “old friends” and “newcomers” is almost sensational. We will host researchers not only from Poland! There will also be guests from Italy, Greece, Slovenia, Montenegro, Turkey, Croatia, Spain, Slovakia, Germany, Russia, Wales, Austria and Switzerland…
We are delighted to present special guests. The conference will be honoured by the presence of Dr Carlos de Juan from the Institute of Underwater Archaeology of the University of Valencia, who, at the invitation of Professor Iwona Modrzewska-Pianetti, Head of the Underwater Archaeology Laboratory of the Faculty of Archaeology of the University of Warsaw, will tell the audience about the fascinating wreck of Mazarrón 2.
Professor Bartosz Kontny (Dean of the Faculty of Archaeology, University of Warsaw and researcher of the one and only lake sacrificial site in Poland!) has invited an expert in the field of water cult, Ph.D. Xenia Pauli Jensen from the archaeological department in Moesgaard Museum, in Denmark. Her lecture will open the panel on the Sacrificial Sites in Waterbodies and Wetlands. The session on the on-water architecture, organized as a part of the National Science Centre grant (2018/29/N/HS3/02949), will be opened by a researcher of the Scottish crannogs, Ph.D. Derek Hamilton from the University in Glasgow.
Of course, for safety reasons, the conference has been planned under an appropriate sanitary “regime”. For this reason, we have limited the number of seats for “offline” listeners. Admission to the ballroom of the Tyszkiewicz-Potocki Palace is limited to those who have previously registered via an online form. However, all willing may listen to the presentation online, thanks to the streaming on YouTube channel Department of Archaeology, University of Warsaw. Those interested are encouraged to follow the Facebook event for up-to-date information: 4th Warsaw Seminar on Underwater Archaeology.
