With another world record in the free immersion category (FIM), William Trubrigde returns home. The New Zealander set the 15th record in his career, reaching a depth of 121m in 4 minutes and 13 seconds. The previous record belonged to Herbert Nitsch from 25 April 2010 and it was 120m in 4 minutes and 28 seconds. Interestingly both records were set in the same place – Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas.

Afterwards he said: “I was quite relaxed preparing for this descent as I managed to reach the120m mark in training. I knew that if I repeated this result it would be good. The descent itself was going according to plan, but when my second alarm went off at 115m, I was starting to run out of air and managed to equalise the pressure one last time. At one point I heard a strange sound in my left ear and feared I had damaged my eardrum. I quickly grabbed the marker, unfortunately as a result I lost contact with the rope! Fortunately, the experience of repeated attempts to descend to great depths without fins allowed me to perform a manoeuvre that put me back on the rope. Sometimes a problem at the bottom can turn into a problem on the surface, fortunately I remained calm and composed on the way out and was able to continue unhindered on the ascent for a hard-won record.”
