White-tailed godwits from Chinese aquarium released into the wild

Two Arctic whitetails have been taken from a Chinese aquarium and transported to a refuge located in open waters off the coast of Iceland. The animals, named Little Grey and Little White, had been on display at Ocean World in Shanghai for almost a decade and had previously lived in a Russian research centre. Now, after many years, they will return to the wild.

Now the animals have been sent on a 6,000 mile journey to a new home after being rescued by campaigners from the UK charity Sea Life Trust. The belugas will return to their natural habitat in the frigid waters off the coast of Iceland after years of captivity.

“Little Grey and Little White are now in their transitional pool, located by the bay, and will need some time to acclimatise to their new environment and become accustomed to all the outside elements before they are finally released into the wider sanctuary located in Klettsvik Bay in the Westman Islands off the south coast of Iceland.” – we can read in a statement from Sea Life Trust

A team of experts and independent vets accompanied Little Grey and Little White throughout the move and said the animals were healthy, had an appetite and were gaining strength before making their way back to the open sea.
