We know the winners of the Molchanova Grand Prix

Alexei Molchanov and Alessia Zecchini took first places in the Natalia Molchanova memorial held last weekend in Ibiza, Spain. It was the first edition of the competition, commemorating the legendary athlete who died tragically in 2015.

The men’s category was won by the son of the Tsarina of freediving, Alexei Molchanov. The next on the podium was his compatriot Andrey Matvienko, and the third place went to a little-known competitor Dean Chipolina from Gibraltar. In turn, among women, the best one was Alessia Zecchini, playing a phenomenal season. In the general classification she overtook Japanese Sayuri Kinoshita, who was second and Chinese Jessea Lu, who got the lowest step on the podium.

During the first day of competition the Constant Weight No Fins – CNF – competition was held.

As a result of this competition, Zecchini placed first with a depth of 67 metres. Kinoshita was second thanks to a 55-metre dive, while China’s Lu took third place with a 50-metre score.

The men’s competition was a little more interesting and not without its thrills. The current world record holder, William Trubridge, descended to a depth of 64 metres, with a declared intention of 89 metres. This resulted in a yellow card and a penalty of 29 points. Molchanov, on the other hand, dived to a depth of 87 metres but failed to gain a marker, which also resulted in a yellow card penalty. Fortunately for the Russian, in this case the penalty was only 1 negative point, which allowed him to take first place.

As an indication of how fierce the competition was, Goran Colak dived to a depth of 81 metres (his target depth was 83 metres), but suffered a blackout on the surface, which forced the judges to show a red card and disqualification. The second red card was given to Vitomir Maricic, who dived to 65 metres but broke the regulations by pulling himself up on the rope.

On the second day of competition, athletes competed in the Constant Weight discipline – CWT

There were no surprises among the ladies. Zecchini, phenomenal this year, took first place with a clean dive to 100 metres. Once again, Kinoshita followed with a second place 86 metre dive. As on the first day, China’s Lu completed the podium with a 70-metre dive.
