The whole thing sounds as unbelievable as if we were dealing with the script of a thriller film. Sometimes, however, life is more surprising than fiction, and so it is in this case. The US Coast Guard in Alameda, California, prevented the smuggling of 8 tonnes of cocaine, which was being smuggled in a… mini-submarine!
“Narco Sub”, as the vessels used by drug smugglers to smuggle their “products” underwater are called, was carrying a record cargo of cocaine, with a market value of over $181 million! In addition to the smuggling information itself, a video of the crew’s arrest was also published online.
“Our success and the mere interception of a 12-metre vessel with a cargo of 8 tonnes of cocaine, is the result of the cooperation of many entities. The whole operation would not have been possible, without the help of many institutions, fighting against smugglers. The size of this cargo shows the importance of the operations we are conducting.” – said Vice Admiral Charles W. Ray
After taking most of the cargo, about 2 tonnes of drugs were left on board to keep the vessel stable while it was towed to shore. Unfortunately, at some point the boat started to rapidly take on water and sank.
Drug traffickers are increasingly eager to use SPSS – Self-Propelled Semi-Submersible – units in their operations. Thanks to them, they can transport huge quantities of cocaine from South America to the USA almost unnoticed.
The entire incident took place on July 18, but for the sake of the investigation and maintaining procedures, only now could this information be made public in the media. The seized cargo. is the largest drug smuggling operation ever foiled by USCG officers.
Since April 2015, 15 different drug smuggling attempts have already been foiled. Counting only since May this year, an attempt to smuggle around 15 tonnes of cocaine with a market value of $540 million has been foiled! It is estimated that nearly 80% of drugs smuggled into the US are brought in through this route.
