Underwater games with lava – video

Can you imagine diving near the mouth of lava heated up to 1000°C? It sounds a bit abstract and unrealistic, especially if we add that during such a dive someone would dare to take fragments of this “fiery substance” and form various shapes (sic!) from it.

But for Bud “Lava Man” Turpin, such diving is not a theme from a sci-fi movie, but reality. Bud carried out this dive, which is hard to imagine, in Hawaii, near the Kilauea volcano, using welding gloves and a hook on which pieces of fish are stuffed to attract sharks.

The Kilauea volcano is in a permanent state of eruption. Therefore, Bud can form fanciful sculptures from the heated lava without any obstacles (unless we consider the risk of loss of life as such). However, the forms he creates are not durable enough to survive further eruptions of lava. That is why Lava Ocean Adventures co-founder and photographer Doug Perrine is at the diver’s side.

It all started in 1983 with the eruption of lava from the Kilauea volcano, which continues to this day. Since then, the solidified lava released from the earth’s interior has covered an area of almost 1000 km² along the south-east coast of Hawaii.

As the divers taking part in these crazy dives themselves tell us, there are at least a few ways to die during such an immersion. The most likely is the one where the newly created structure proves unstable and collapses, crushing the divers or pushing them into the depths.
