The findings so far show that the wreck of the German U-boat, class UB-II, lies at a depth of 30 metres and is in very good condition, with all hatches closed. It is on this basis, among others, that the scientists investigating the wreck assume that there are most probably 23 bodies of sailors serving on it on board.
Most of the information about the ship are only preliminary assumptions and hypotheses, still to be confirmed. The inspection of the damage to the bow section, however, allows us to determine with high probability a mine strike as the cause of the sinking. The kiosk of the vessel remains intact and both periscopes are still very well visible.
The German ship is unofficially said to be lying in the vicinity of Ostende harbour, but the more detailed location of the wreck is covered by secrecy. All because of the shallow depth and easy accessibility to the ship itself. Those investigating the U-boat want to protect it from looting or destruction for as long as possible.
The German side has already been informed about the find in order to jointly determine what steps to take with regard to the find. In all likelihood, due to the location of the wreck at shallow depths, the remains of the sailors will be excavated and after more than 100 years the crew of the submarine will see an official burial.
A total of 93 German submarines were stationed in Belgium, sinking more than 2,500 vessels. Of those 93, as many as 70 went down, taking the lives of nearly 1,200 sailors with them. In Flanders in the years 1915-18 there were about 18 ships, 13 of which were sent to the bottom. To this day wrecks of 11 U-boats from World War I have been found in Belgian waters, but it is the one described, despite the passage of time, that is in the best condition.
The UB-II class submarines measured 27 metres long and 6 metres wide. They were produced in 1915-1916 and could dive to a depth of 50 metres.
