The wreck of the steamer USS Keystone State, which was sunk during the Civil War 1861-1865, has been identified in the waters of Lake Huron. A group of deep-sea divers tracked the vessel using side scan sonar as early as June this year, but further action was required to fully identify the vessel.

The first information about what kind of vessel we are dealing with was provided by wreck finder David Trotter on 9 December. The remains of the steamer are located at a depth of about 60m, about 50mil north of a place called the “thumb of Michigan”.

The USS Keystone State was a ship of almost 90 metres in length, launched in 1849 and at the time it was the second largest American vessel. However, what made the greatest impression was not her size, but the luxurious equipment and care for the due prestige of the vessel.

On November 8, 1861, the steamer left Detroit with its cargo officially described as “iron parts” or “agricultural machinery”. However, since the sinking, rumours of a special cargo of what were supposed to be guns and ammunition have persisted. This is all the more likely because not very many farms need agricultural machinery in winter.

Today, when esxploration of the interior of the wreck is no longer a major problem, we will be able to determine what really constituted the cargo of the USS Keystone State.
