The true story of Poseidon

A book by Steven Schwankert, entitled ‘The true story of the Poseidon – the secret raising by the Chinese, of a British wreck, will soon be on the market. The plot concerns the British submarine HMS Poseidon, which sank in waters near the north-east coast of China in 1931.

Shwankert has been carrying out the project and gathering information for the past seven years. As a result, he established that the Chinese secretly dealt with the wreck and its raising already 40 years ago, in 1972. The book chronicles the events that affected the Poseidon, but it also brings many answers as to its fate. Throughout the time the book was being written, all the ups and downs were shared with the author by the descendants of the crew of HMS Poseidon, whose expedition to Asia brought them together in search of the truth and new information about the fate of their loved ones.

Steven Schwankert, journalist and diving instructor, when asked about his feelings says:

“I regret that we have not been able to find more relatives to tell them the truth about the fate of their loved ones. We feel this responsibility, to be the guardians of the history of HMS Poseidon.”

Before sinking, the ship had been in service for only 2 years and at that time was considered one of the most modern in the entire fleet. Unfortunately, on the 9th of June 1931, during the exercises, she accidentally collided with a Chinese merchant ship while surfacing. The hull was crushed and the ship sank 30m down from the surface in the next 4min.

For 30 crew members, they managed to get out, but 26 were not so lucky. 8 men made the manoeuvre to abandon ship through the torpedo hatches, using equipment called “Davis’s lung”, early diving equipment prepared for just such a situation. 6 of them reached the surface, the first time in history that diving equipment had been used in this way.
