The wedding day is a special event in every couple’s life. Preparations take a lot of time, not to mention planning every single detail. After all, it is a day that the young couple is to remember for the rest of their lives. So it is no wonder that everyone wants something to stand out and introduces elements to make the ceremony unique.
Hiroyuki Yoshida and Sandra Smith are a couple whose wedding has taken underwater ceremonies to a whole new level. The two technical divers decided to say the sacramental “I do” to each other at a depth of… 130m! Thus, it was the deepest wedding ceremony in the world, which was officially entered into the Guinness Book of Records. Additionally, it should be mentioned that the entire dive was conducted on closed circuits!
All this took place in one of the caves located in the depths of Song Hong Lake in Thailand. But for the plan to succeed, sacrifices and dedication were needed. The deepest wedding in history was preceded by six months of training to ensure the newlyweds had the right skills to carry it out safely.
Hiro and Sandy are two technical diving instructors from Blue Label Diving in Bunaken, Indonesia. They started their adventure with technical diving in 2009. They started their technical diving adventure in 2009 (sidemount, twinset, closed circuit) and 3 years later in 2012 they started their career as technical diving instructors.
Under the guidance of instructor trainer + Ben Reymenant, they underwent TDI courses: Full Cave CCR, Advanced Mixed Gas CCR. This allowed them to have a truly cave-diving wedding, as in addition to the 130m depth mentioned above, the newlyweds went 100m deep into the cave.
In addition to Hiro and Sandy, 3 more people participated in the whole event. The aforementioned instructor Ben Reymenant, who also acted as the priest, TDI CCR Cave Level 3 Instructor Pekka Hartikainen assisted as a witness on the groom’s side and Charles Hosner – TDI Full Cave CCR diver, who filmed the entire ceremony and also acted as a second witness.
The ceremony lasted 7min, while after 15min the group started the ascent. The first decompression stop was at 99m, while the whole dive took 190min. At a depth of 60m, support divers were waiting, who in addition to the planned cylinders of breathing mixture, brought along a video camera.
Initial reports suggest that later in 2014 another couple wants to break Hiro and Sandy’s record by getting married at a depth of 210m!
