On the 24th of April, the 5th European Conference on Scientific Diving began at the Institute of Oceanology PAS. We could not have done otherwise than to include the event under our media patronage, so that the diving community had a chance to learn as much as possible about this interesting initiative.

The first edition of ECSD took place in 2015 in Stuttgart, Germany. After Kristineberg in Sweden, Funchal in Madeira, Portugal, Orkney Islands in the UK, this year for the first time the conference is organised in Poland. Specifically, in Sopot, where the role of host is played by the Diving Team of IO PAS, led by Dr. Piotr Bazy.

The idea behind the event was to combine a conference on research into shallow water and freshwater systems with an international conference on professional diving for scientific purposes. The aim is to bring together individuals and organisations interested in using diving as a tool in scientific work.

The fifth edition is hosted by the Diving Team of the Institute of Oceanography of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The team is made up of scientists with different specialities (oceanography, biology, geology and marine chemistry) who use diving as one of their research tools.

About 70 participants from all over the world are taking part in the conference. The issues discussed concern research carried out both in the Baltic and Mediterranean regions, at the poles, in the Arctic and Antarctic and in the mountains of Peru.

This year’s speakers include well-known figures from the world of science, such as Dr. Martin Sayer, Dr. Richard Pyle, Dr. Ken Collins and many others. Among the Polish scientists, Prof. Adam Sokołowski, PhD, Prof. Piotr Kukliński, PhD, Prof. Maria Włodarska-Kowalczuk, PhD, Prof. Bartosz Kontny, PhD, Piotr Bazy, PhD, Jarosław Kur and others will give their presentations during the conference.

The opening lectures were given by Professor Jan Marcin Węsławski, Dr Richard Pyle, Dr Jacek Kot and Tomasz Stachura. More about the conference will be available soon on our website.

More information can be found on conference website.
