A group of divers from Trellebrog, Sweden, located and investigated and collected photo and video documentation of a US WWII B17G bomber that crashed near the Swedish coast in 1944.
The machine’s final resting place was established on Friday 13 February. It was then that a group of divers from Trelleborg located the wreck at a depth of about 17m. Due to such a shallow depth, as well as the close location to land, no information about the bomber’s position was revealed.
The wreck of the American bomber B17G, disappeared from the pages of history and human memory for nearly 70 years. Now its story is coming back thanks to people like John Öhlen and Tobias Andersson, who are responsible for finding the wreck.
Before them, many other daredevils had attempted to find the Allied machine, but without success. The year 2015 thus begins with a very interesting wreck accent, which we hope is a harbinger of more interesting finds for the next months.
“We searched for it for three weeks, and I must point out straight away that this is not a particularly long search period if we are talking about locating wrecks. We knew more or less where it could be and we just started combing a certain area. It is a very interesting wreck. The fact that it has been searched for by many people before, but only we managed to find it, is an extra bonus,” said Johan Öhlen. – Johan Öhlen said.
It all started with a tip-off from a local fisherman (a classic of the genre) who found metal pieces in his net while fishing. Although the weather and temperature were not favourable, the efforts of the two divers were duly rewarded. They managed to locate the propeller blades and engines at the indicated location.
According to the explorers, the position of the plane will be revealed when the exploration and documentation of the site is completed. Until then, everything is to be kept secret so as to keep the number of unauthorised dives to a minimum.
The American B17 bomber, G version, was the unit’s sixth and penultimate model to go into series production. It was characterised by a very strong gunner armament. The first examples appeared in the sky in 1943, and a total of 8685 were produced, of which 85 were transferred to the British Royal Air Force, where they served under the designation Fortress MKIII.
