Organizers announced the results of the worldwide Shark Trust Great Shark Snapshot survey, in which hundreds of divers participated.

In late July, hundreds of people around the world took part in the Shark Trust Great Shark Snapshot survey. As part of the initiative, individual divers, as well as clubs and dive centers, conducted shark and ray surveys. Volunteers were active in every latitude from Europe to Australia and Asia to the Americas.

In seven days, participants operating in 14 countries recorded as many as 1,846 shark and ray specimens from 49 different species.

I’m thrilled with how our first Great Shark Snapshot action went. I was most pleased to get so many messages from people telling me how much they enjoyed participating in our action. Many of the dive centers I spoke with have decided to conduct regular shark and ray surveys and will be adding their sightings to our Shark Log database Caroline Robertson-Brown, marketing coordinator at the Shark Trust, said.

The initiative Shark Trust has brought together a great many divers with varying experience. For some, these were their first encounters with sharks and rays, while others are well acquainted with the allure of such dives. Regardless of motivations and experiences, it is certainly to be appreciated that the global diving community was brought together by a common goal.

We want to thank all of you who participated in our first Great Shark Snapshot. Hundreds of divers took part and your response was wonderful. We are very pleased with your response and how many of you intend to continue conducting similar sightings throughout the year.
