The exhibition “Sunken Empire – Baje Archaeological Park” is the fruit of the journey of photographers Marcin Trzciński and Wojciech Zgola, who cooperate with the Department of Underwater Archaeology of the University of Warsaw, to the site of underwater excavations carried out in the famous Baje resort on the Bay of Naples in Italy during the Roman Empire. We “touch” the times before the birth of Christ.

The first underwater findings in the 1960s generated considerable interest in the area. However, it was not until the 1980s that large-scale exploration of the bay began. They resulted in the discovery of the remains of the great military and commercial port of the empire – Portus Julius, as well as the villas of the imperial aristocracy located on the other side of the bay, including the families of Claudius, Pizo and others. Nowadays, every year, further research is carried out, as well as reconstruction work on the monuments found.

Our stay of several days resulted in hundreds of photographs of selected parts of the huge excavation area.
We hope that the photographs presented here will allow you to visualise the vastness of the underwater wealth accumulated in the bay, and at least for a moment appreciate the wealth and craftsmanship of the builders of the Roman Empire 2000 years ago.
