Octopus takes revenge for filling its lair with obstacles – video

Scientists studying octopus behaviour decided to see how one of their charges would behave when they filled its favourite barrel-crate with obstacles. What happened next came as a complete surprise to them.

Arnold is a rescued octopus living at the Octolab facility, which studies the behaviour of these unusual animals. His favourite hiding place is a barrel, which the scientists decided to fill with wooden blocks to see how the animal would react.

“We were completely surprised by Arnold’s reaction. Firstly, he tried to enter his barrel, and moments later he turned purple with anger when it turned out that he found the hide filled with blocks. Then, in a fit of anger, he took the water filter cover and even when the keepers took the item away from him, he would steal it back moments later.”

Arnold then took all the tiles from the bottom of his tank and decided to hide them in his barrel. Apparently, the octopus decided that since the scientists decided to take away her favourite hiding place, she decided to take things that belonged to them in retaliation.

This is a remarkable example of temperament on the part of this sea creature and a set of behaviours that are characteristic of young children. Watching Arnold turn purple and bear more things into his lair was reminiscent of a small child getting angry in the sandpit.
