Oceans S1 computer with inter-diver communication system

Swedish brand Oceans.Io is attempting to bring to market the first dive computer with a peer-to-peer communication system. The Oceans S1 Supersonic is a small watch computer that is intended to be used by recreational divers. However, the built-in communication system, if it proves useful, will certainly find more applications.

The device uses built-in ultrasonic sensors to send a message-signal, to our dive partner. The system used in Oceans S1 works effectively in a range of 15-20 m, and even more. Everything depends on the terrain and environment in which the dive is carried out.

When the user receives a signal from a partner, they see the name of the sender, so they can easily identify which diver is trying to get their attention. However, this is not the only functionality of the Oceans S1. In addition to the basic indications that similar devices feature, the S1 also offers a high-resolution colour display, a 3D digital compass, inductive charging, Bluetooth communication, or Android and iOS compatibility.

Oceans S1 weighs 95 grams and operates to a depth of 50 metres. The unit can store 500 logged dives or 80h of data. Fully charged, the battery should last for a trouble-free 10h of unit operation.

At the moment, the computer is the subject of a campaign on the popular start-up portal, “Kickstarter”. The whole project, however, is made credible by Fabien Cousteau himself.

Price: €998 for 2 pcs.
