Russian Ekaterina Nekrasova swam 85 metres under the ice while holding her breath and set a new Guinness World Record for freediving under the ice. The event was held under the Dynamic Apnea Without Fins – DNF rules.
A 40-year-old freediver from Moscow conducted her record attempt in the waters of beautiful Lake Baikal, located in Siberia near Irkutsk. This tectonic body of water is the deepest and oldest lake in the world, as well as the second largest in Asia and the seventh largest in the world.
Diving into the icy water, the Russian was dressed only in a one-piece swimming suit. Such, by the way, were the conditions of the record attempt, in which Nekrasova could not wear a wetsuit or fins for freediving.
Despite the water temperature of around 0°C and the air temperature of -22°C, the athlete had no major problems with this and made a successful 85m attempt under the ice in 1.5 minutes.
With her feat she beat result set in march 2020. by South African representative Amber Fillary, who covered a distance of 70m in Norway in 2020.
