A sunken cannon dating back to World War II has been found during construction work on a pier in the port of Salerno, Italy.

An unexpected remnant of the war was found at the end of October 2020. Construction workers dredging the entrance to the harbour basin near the Manfredi pier came across a cannon resting on the bottom of the harbour, which was then brought to the surface.

The discovery of the World War II-era item caused work to be halted as a thorough search of the site was required to look for other historical artefacts that could also be at the bottom.

Representatives of the local museum and the deputy commissioner of the Salerno Border Police also visited the site to inspect the state of preservation of the excavated cannon. The light cannon is probably a remnant of the Allied landing operation Avalanche, which began on 9 September 1943.

Three artillery shells were also found underwater, which were neutralised by the Italian Navy.
