Freediving on ice

Russian Alexei Molchanov set a new freediving world record in the dynamic swimming in fins competition – DYN… under the ice! The athlete swam a distance of 180 metres while holding his breath! The record attempt took place on Tuesday, February 25, in a body of water located in the Moscow region.

With his feat, the Russian athlete broke the record held by Frenchman Arthur Guérin-Boëri, who covered a distance of 175 metres under the ice in 2017. Although the distance is impressive, it should be remembered that due to the extreme conditions, it is quite a lot smaller than the results achieved in the pool.

I was a very happy cameraman, but I couldn’t help wondering what it would be like if I…

Under “normal” conditions, in the DYN competition, Molchanov holds the score of 258 metres. In turn, the world record in this competition has been shared since 2016 by. Pole Mateusz Malina and Greek Giorgos Panagiotakis, who achieved a result of 300 m during the World Championships in Finland.

Alexei Molchanov is one of the world’s leading apnea divers . In his career to date he has won the AIDA and CMAS freediving world championship eight times and has repeatedly set world records in individual disciplines.

Privately, he is the son of the sport’s legend Natalia Molchanova, who disappeared during a training session near the island of Formentera near Ibiza in 2015. On March 3, the film “One Breath”, dedicated to the Tsarina of Freediving, as the Russian athlete was called, will have its premiere and it is hard not to get the impression that Alexei’s record-breaking feat is the element that was supposed to grace this extremely important production for him.
