A fantastic performance by three Polish freedivers during the recently finished CMAS European Freediving Pool Championships held in Istanbul. The Poles won a total of 5 medals and set 3 world records, which ultimately allowed our team to take 3rd place in the general classification.

Our team, consisting of Julia Kozerska, Magdalena Solich-Talanda and Mateusz Malina, once again proved that when it comes to pool competition on hold, Poland is among the world’s best.

CMAS Freediving Indoor European Championship 2019 – Istanbul our representatives closed with a very good result, but everyone is aware that they haven’t said the last word yet!

It started with gold and a world record by Julia Kozerska in the dynamic swimming without fins – DNF competition. The result of 196.98 m allowed her not only to win the competition, but also to improve the best result in the world – 191 m, which belongs to Magdalena Solich-Talanda.

Unfortunately, our second competitor can speak about exceptional bad luck. After reaching the distance of 187.22 m she had a blackout and according to CMAS rules she could not start in the next competitions. It’s a great pity, especially if we look at how much effort she put into her preparations and remember the exciting competition of our best competitors during last year’s World Championships in Belgrade (2 gold and 2 silver medals).

On the first day of the competition Mateusz Malina also showed good side. In dynamic swimming without fins – DNF he reached 234.29 m (new world record), but in the further part of the competition he was unexpectedly defeated by Frenchman Guillaume Bourdil (236 m) and finally he took the second place and won silver medal.

On the second day the competition in statics – STA was played and from our team only Mateusz Malina appeared in the pool. Due to the championships rules (blackout eliminates from further participation) and the fact that on the next day his favourite discipline – DYN – had to be played, Mateusz approached the competition very conservatively. 8 minutes and 50 seconds was however enough to take 3rd place and win the bronze medal.

On the last day of the Polish athletes’ competition, there was no shortage of emotions either! In the dynamic swimming in fins – DYN competition Mateusz Malina achieved a distance of 316 metres and literally crushed the world record (300 m), which… he set himself in 2016.

Julia Kozerska also had a successful start in the DYN competition. The gold medallist and holder of a new world record in the dynamic without fins competition – DNF, this time presented herself very well in fins, achieving a distance of 234 metres. This allowed her to take 3rd place and win a bronze medal!
