Mateusz Malina with the world record and gold medal of ME!

Mateusz Malina’s phenomenal start at the 2019 CMAS Freediving Indoor European Championship – Istanbul! The Pole achieved a distance of 316 metres in the dynamics in fins – DYN competition and, setting a new world record, took the gold medal.

Thus, after 3 days of the tournament Mateusz already has a full set of medals, because on the first day in the dynamic discipline without fins – DNF, he won the silver (although it should be noted that literally in the last straight line the gold and the world record was taken away from him by a fantastic performance of the Frenchman Guillaume Bourdila), and on the second day of the championships he won the bronze medal in statistics.

Julia Kozerska will also certainly count her start in the DYN competition as a success. The gold medallist and holder of a new world record in the dynamic without fins competition – DNF, this time presented herself very well in fins, achieving a distance of 234 meters. This allowed her to take 3rd place and win a bronze medal!

The world record in this discipline, 243 metres, was set last year by Magdalena Solich-Talanda during the AIDA World Championships held in Belgrade. Unfortunately, in accordance with CMAS regulations, the second of our best competitors was eliminated from further participation in the European Championships by a blackout on the first day of the competition.

It is a great pity, as all freediving fans surely remember the fantastic performances of Julia Kozerska and Magdalena Solich-Talanda at the 2018 AIDA World Championships in Belgrade and were hoping for a repeat of this exciting rivalry.

For those who are not familiar with the topic, I would like to remind you that our athletes won two gold (Solich-Talanda) and two silver (Kozerska) medals at that time, showing that in both disciplines they are not only absolutely unrivalled in Poland, but also set the tone for the world’s top.
