According to Bernama, Malaysia’s national news agency, locations within Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Redang, Pulau Tenggol, Pahang and Kedah are set to reopen. The sites were previously closed due to coral fading as a result of rising water temperatures.

Although the threat was not caused by divers, the decision was taken to close to best aid reef recovery.

According to observations, the environment has improved and the condition of the reef is better.
Dr Sukarno Wagiman, Director General of Malaysian Marine National Parks, said: “According to our measurements, the condition of the seawater has improved and as a result, 90-100% has been regenerated.”

It is not entirely clear whether this means that the corals have recovered almost completely, or simply that almost all of them are showing improvement.
